[ARCHIVED] Commissioner Meeting Recap for July 17, 2023

Monday might have been the only New Hanover County Board of Commissioners meeting in the month of July, but it certainly featured some very important items, including the adoption of a new strategic plan that will guide the county through Fiscal Year 2024-28. A recap of the meeting is below.

2022 Child Fatality Prevention Team report presented

The local Child Fatality Prevention Team (CFPT) presented its annual report for 2022 to Commissioners. Established at a state level in 1993, locally organized CFPTs confidentially review medical reports and death records for anyone under the age of 18 and offer insight to local governments on preventative measures or other actions moving forward.

As part of their recommendations, the CFPT encouraged continual training to help in reducing risks and keeping children safe. A request to appoint a member of the Health and Human Services Board to the local CFPT was also approved by Commissioners.

Strategic plan adopted for Fiscal Years 2024-28

Commissioners unanimously moved to adopt a new strategic plan that will serve as a guide for county government through fiscal years 2024-28[ML1] . This marks the third five-year strategic plan in New Hanover County history.

The plan, which was built utilizing input from citizens and community partners, as well as local and regional data, centers around a trio of community-focused outcomes, including Workforce & Economic Development, Community Safety & Well-being, and Sustainable Land Use & Environmental Stewardship. The plan also features foundational protocols for operating county government under the model of good governance. This includes effective county management, strong financial performance and responsible stewardship. Data-measured metrics have been established to gauge how effective the plan is for each of these focus areas and will be monitored and adjusted during the life of the plan.

That’s not all …

The 2022 Annual Tax Settlement was presented by staff and unanimously approved by Commissioners. It was noted that last year, the tax collection rate for New Hanover County was 99.47 percent.

A pair of public hearings were held related to Planning & Land Use requests. The first, a text amendment to amend the Unified Development Ordinance requirements for campgrounds, was denied in a unanimous vote. The second, to rezone 17.9 acres off Castle Hayne Road from residential to a commercial business park, was unanimously approved.
