Immunization Awareness Month recognized

Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing August as National Immunization Awareness Month. This month highlights the importance of vaccines approved by the Centers for Disease Control as a proven method to stop the spread of preventable diseases to help keep individuals and communities safe and healthy. Project Grace amended development agreement approved

Staff from several New Hanover County departments and Cape Fear Development made a presentation to Commissioners updating them on an amended development agreement that would move forward the redevelopment of a block in Downtown Wilmington owned by the county. The endeavor, known as Project Grace, would create a joint facility to house a state-of-the-art public library and new Cape Fear Museum in downtown, while also guaranteeing at least $30 million of private development on the block once the county facility is complete. Under the new agreement, the project would be capped at a cost of $55,942,679.

Commissioners unanimously approved the new development agreement. Later this year, the Local Government Commission will review the county's request to issue debt for the project.

That’s not all …

Commissioners held two public hearings for rezoning requests. The first rezoned more than 70 combined acres off Holly Shelter and Blue Clay roads previously zoned as light industrial and residential to residential multi-family, low density housing. The second was rezoning 0.92 acres of land off Shelley Drive to allow for higher density residential development. Both proposals were unanimously passed.

Additionally, a quasi-judicial hearing for a special use permit was unanimously approved, allowing for Sanctuary Church of Wilmington to use its facility as a childcare center.
